Independence Day

This year is flying by, right?! I find myself saying that every year. But this year seems to be moving at a very steady and almost rapid pace. I’m already starting to think about Christmas. Too early? It’s the mom in me I guess. I’m gonna touch on some important things that feel we should all keep in mind during this holiday. Here we go.

Independence Day is approaching. While most of us are knee deep in celebrations already, I’m hoping that we keep a few things in mind. The immense diversity of America is one of the many things that makes this country unique. Nowadays, even I have gotten caught up in the division of our country. We are all so passionate about some very specific ideals. But we must remember that Americans come in many beautiful shades and colors. And we all deserve to be treated respectfully no matter what we may believe and no matter how we live our lives.

I know it’s much easier, especially with everything that’s happening currently, to find reasons to separate ourselves from one another. Our struggles are different. Our cultures are different. Our history is different. As a black woman, raising black children. I hesitantly have very necessary conversations about police brutality and equality with my family. But I know that those conversations are imperative to their growth. And they are difficult conversations to have.

And even as we have these conversations and watch documentaries about the suffering of people who look like us. I also remind them that they must keep love in their hearts. They must keep their minds open. And the utmost importance of thinking critically and being objective.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that we are all struggling to find our way. The muck is thick and we’re trudging through it with all our might. It doesn’t feel like we are making any progress, but in fact, we are. Stay the course. Challenge yourself to push through the hateful rhetoric that is being spewed on an hourly basis. Keep your mind open. Keep love in your heart. Have a safe and relaxing holiday everyone.

I’m gonna go have a beer and eat some ice cream. This is a judgment free zone like Planet Fitness so keep your opinions about my eating habits to yourself.

Stay inspired,

– Kristle
